This video is to give you some more information on first getting set up online. One of the most important things a lot of people don't really give enough attention to is the importance of their domain name.
So let's go ahead and get started.
Choosing the right web address, or domain name, for your business is a very important decision. There's a few reasons for that...
Your domain name is a vital part of your website's visibility.
It's what people are going to use to find you online. Your domain name also helps your business build a brand identity that people will recognize.
If you think of a lot of websites that you may not have ever heard of the name before, like Etsy and eBay, those words didn't mean anything. The brand made those words and now they're household names.
With over 330 million domain names already registered, your opportunity to secure the name you want is getting more and more difficult. This is especially true if you're wanting to get a ".com". Dot-com names are hard to find, especially if you're trying to find anything that's not a kind of made-up word that you're using for your branding and even a lot of the made-up words are getting more difficult to secure.
Other important elements to a winning domain name includes social media availability. So not only do you want to make sure you can secure your domain name but you want to make sure that you can secure the social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc) that match that domain name you want to get.
A domain name that's simple and easy to remember.
You don't want anything that's too long
or too complicated. You want to avoid something that's spelled weird or something that has dashes or anything that's going to make it hard for somebody to remember.
Short and easy to spell, kind of what we were just
talking about with "simple and easy to remember", if it's too long, if it's spelled different or if you use odd spelling or use a number instead of a letter a lot of time that's going to make it very difficult for your potential clients to find your website.
The more relevant your domain name is to your business, the easier it's going to be for people just to see the name and know what it is that you do.
Your website and your domain name will a lot of the time be someone's first exposure to your business and brand. Like I was saying earlier, if you have a domain that easily explains what your business does, it takes away a lot of the confusion.
If you're able to get your business's name as a “.com”, then GET IT. If not, that's okay too. It's generally a good idea to stay as close to your business name as possible, so maybe a “.net” or maybe a “.org”, there's a lot of other extensions available now on offer for your website and your domain.
Help others and search engines like Google know what your site is about quickly by using
keywords related to your business. For example, the domain “YourNamePlumbing com” leaves no doubt what it is you do.
So if you're a plumber and you're business is “Anderson Plumbing” and you have “AndersonPlumbing.com”, there is absolutely zero doubt that you're a plumbing business.
If your name is Chris Anderson and you're a plumber but your website is “CAnderson.com”, even though you’re using most of your name, it gives no indication what it is that you do.
Another important factor in choosing the best domain name for your business is the domain extension. like we talked about a minute ago, “.com” is the most popular, but there's also
net org and hundreds of other extensions and we're more than happy to sit down with you when we're building your website to talk about potential options for your domain name and domain extension that would be the most beneficial for your business.
